The Middle East is once again on high alert after Israel announced a pre-emptive attack on Iran. Iranian media reported multiple explosions in the capital, Tehran, raising fears of a renewed military confrontation in the region.

Israel’s Position: Acting Against Threats to National Security

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz stated, “The State of Israel launched a pre-emptive attack against Iran to remove threats to the State of Israel.” Israel views Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs as a serious threat to its national security.

The strike comes after a 12-day air conflict between Israel and Iran in June. Prior to this, both Israel and the United States had repeatedly warned that they would take military action if Iran continued advancing its nuclear and missile programs.

Explosions in Tehran and Emergency Measures

According to Iranian media, multiple explosions were heard across Tehran. Following the attack, the Israeli military announced restrictions on educational activities, public gatherings, and workplaces, while exempting “essential sectors.” Tel Aviv also closed its airspace to civilian flights.

Diplomatic Context and Negotiations

The United States and Iran resumed talks in February in an effort to resolve the decades-long nuclear dispute diplomatically and prevent a military conflict that could destabilize the region.

Israel has insisted that any U.S. deal with Iran must include the dismantling of Tehran’s nuclear infrastructure, not just a halt to uranium enrichment, and has lobbied Washington to include restrictions on Iran’s missile program in negotiations.

Iran stated it was open to discussing limitations on its nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief but rejected linking the issue to missiles. Tehran also warned that it would defend itself against any attack and cautioned neighboring countries hosting U.S. troops that American bases could be targeted if Washington struck Iran.

Past Clashes and Regional Implications

In June, the U.S. joined Israel in military action against Iranian nuclear facilities, marking the most direct American operation against the Islamic Republic. In response, Iran launched missiles toward the Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, the largest U.S. military base in the Middle East.

Western powers have warned that Iran’s ballistic missile program threatens regional stability and could deliver nuclear weapons if fully developed, though Tehran denies pursuing atomic bombs.

The latest developments have not only undermined hopes for a diplomatic solution but also heightened fears of a wider military confrontation with potentially serious consequences for regional and global security.
