New York City police confirmed on Sunday that a device thrown outside Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s residence during weekend protests was an explosive capable of causing serious injury or death. The incident occurred on Saturday outside Gracie Mansion, where Mamdani lives with his wife.

Details of the Incident

  • The device, a jar filled with nuts, bolts, screws, and wrapped in black tape with a fuse, was ignited and thrown by a counterprotester but extinguished itself before detonating, according to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch.
  • Two people, identified as Emir Balat (18) and Ibrahim Kayumi, were arrested at the scene. Authorities are working with the FBI and the US Department of Justice on the investigation.
  • Another device was also thrown during the protest and is still under examination.

Background of the Protests

  • Far-right activist Jake Lang led a protest of about 20 people against what he called an Islamic “takeover” of New York City and opposed public Muslim prayers.
  • A counter-protest of 125 people gathered to oppose Lang’s group.
  • The explosive was thrown by counter-protester Emir Balat. The device rolled near police before self-extinguishing. Balat allegedly lit a second device in the street.

Mayor Mamdani’s Response

Mayor Mamdani condemned both Lang’s protest and the violent actions that followed. He said:

“Violence at a protest is never acceptable. The attempt to use an explosive device and hurt others is not only criminal, it is reprehensible and the antithesis of who we are.”

Investigation

  • Tisch noted there is no immediate evidence linking the incident to the US attack on Iran, but the investigation remains ongoing.
  • Police are examining motives, devices, and coordinating with federal authorities to ensure accountability and public safety.

This incident highlights the rising tensions surrounding extremist protests in New York City and the risks of violence at politically charged demonstrations.
