The federal government has officially declared public holidays for Eid ul Adha 2026, allowing citizens a three-day break across the country.

Official Holiday Notification Issued

The federal government has announced that May 26, 27, and 28, 2026 (Tuesday to Thursday) will be observed as public holidays on the occasion of Eid ul Adha. The announcement was made through an official notification issued by the Cabinet Division.

According to the statement, the decision has been approved by the Prime Minister, confirming a three-day nationwide holiday period to facilitate religious observances and public convenience during the festival.

Eid ul Adha Date in Pakistan

As per the announcement by the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, Eid ul Adha will be observed in Pakistan on May 27, 2026 (Wednesday).

The decision was taken after the crescent moon for the Islamic month of Zilhaj was sighted in various parts of the country. The committee held its meeting at the Pakistan Meteorological Department in Karachi, where officials confirmed receiving credible testimonies of moon sighting from multiple regions.

Following consensus, it was declared that 1st Zilhaj 1447 AH would begin on May 18, paving the way for Eid celebrations on May 27.

Religious Significance of Eid ul Adha

Eid ul Adha, also known as the “Festival of Sacrifice,” holds deep religious significance in Islam. It commemorates the story of Prophet Ibrahim (PBUH), who showed unwavering obedience to Allah when he was commanded to sacrifice his son. According to Islamic tradition, the act was divinely replaced with a ram, symbolizing mercy and submission to God’s will.

The occasion is marked by special Eid prayers held in mosques and Eidgahs across the country, followed by the ritual sacrifice of animals. The meat is traditionally distributed among family members, friends, and those in need, reinforcing values of charity and social solidarity.

Public Celebrations and Preparations

Across Pakistan, preparations for Eid ul Adha begin weeks in advance, with livestock markets becoming active in major cities such as Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad. Citizens purchase sacrificial animals, while markets and transport hubs witness increased activity.

With the announcement of official holidays, families are expected to travel and participate in Eid gatherings, continuing one of the most widely observed religious festivals in the Muslim world.
