Iran’s football federation has asked FIFA to help secure multiple-entry visas for the United States ahead of the 2026 World Cup, as logistical and political complications continue to affect team arrangements.

FIFA Urged to Facilitate Player Travel

Iran’s football federation president Mehdi Taj said the team expects FIFA to intervene and arrange multiple-entry visas for Iranian players so they can travel smoothly between host countries.

He explained that the arrangement is necessary because Iran’s national team, known as Team Melli, will need to move between the United States and Mexico during the tournament schedule.

According to Taj,

“FIFA is expected to deliver a multiple-entry visa so that the players can enter (the United States) and return (to Mexico).”

The statement reflects ongoing concerns about travel restrictions and administrative hurdles linked to broader geopolitical tensions.

Changes in Team Base Due to Visa Concerns

Iran originally planned to base its training camp in Tucson, Arizona, but later shifted preparations to Tijuana, Mexico, which is co-hosting the tournament alongside the US and Canada.

Officials said the decision was taken to avoid potential complications in obtaining US visas and to ensure easier movement for players and staff.

The team is expected to travel into the United States only for its scheduled group-stage matches.

World Cup Group Matches in the United States

Iran has been drawn into a group where all three matches will be played in the United States:

  • Los Angeles: vs New Zealand (June 15)
  • Los Angeles: vs Belgium
  • Seattle: vs Egypt

Despite training in Mexico, the squad will still need entry clearance into the US for match participation.

Political Background and Team Uncertainty

Iran’s participation in the tournament comes against a backdrop of heightened regional tensions following a conflict involving US and Israeli strikes earlier in 2026.

These developments have added pressure on diplomatic and sporting arrangements, particularly regarding travel permissions and security coordination.

Iranian officials have not reported any final resolution yet, but say preparations for the tournament are continuing.

Squad Issues and Internal Debate

The report also noted uncertainty around star striker Sardar Azmoun, who was not included in the initial squad list. His omission has sparked internal debate, including calls from some officials for his return.

Azmoun has previously been a key player for Iran, scoring 57 international goals and playing club football in Europe and the Gulf region. His national team status remains unclear as discussions continue.

Iran’s request for FIFA assistance highlights how major international tournaments can be affected by political and logistical realities. While preparations continue, the federation is seeking solutions to ensure smooth travel between host nations and full participation in the World Cup schedule.
