Iran signals firm stance on negotiations with Washington, stressing rights-based guarantees before any agreement.

Iran’s Firm Position on Possible US Agreement

Iran’s top negotiator and re-elected parliamentary speaker Mohammad Baqer Ghalibaf has stated that Iran will not accept any agreement with the United States unless it is backed by clear and verifiable outcomes that ensure the rights of the Iranian people.

According to remarks reported by Iranian state media on Sunday, Ghalibaf emphasized that Tehran remains highly sceptical of US assurances and diplomatic promises.

He said that any future arrangement aimed at ending tensions between Iran and the United States would only be considered acceptable if it guarantees “tangible results” before Iran makes any reciprocal commitments.

“No Trust in Enemy Promises”

Ghalibaf strongly underlined a position of caution in dealings with Washington, stating that Iran does not trust what he described as “enemy words and promises.”

His comments reflect longstanding tensions between Iran and the United States, where diplomatic relations have remained strained for decades, particularly over nuclear, sanctions, and regional security issues.

Iranian officials have repeatedly insisted that any negotiations must include concrete safeguards rather than relying solely on verbal assurances.

Political Context Behind the Statement

The remarks came shortly after Ghalibaf took oath as the re-elected Speaker of Iran’s parliament and the head of its presidium. His reaffirmation of Iran’s negotiating stance signals continuity in Tehran’s foreign policy approach amid ongoing regional and international discussions.

Iran has in recent years engaged intermittently in indirect talks with the United States, often mediated by third parties, particularly regarding nuclear-related issues and sanctions relief.

Ongoing US–Iran Tensions

Relations between Iran and the United States remain deeply strained due to disagreements over Iran’s nuclear programme, regional influence, and sanctions imposed by Washington.

Despite occasional diplomatic channels opening, both sides continue to differ on core issues, making any comprehensive agreement difficult to achieve.

Ghalibaf’s latest remarks suggest that Iran will maintain a cautious and results-driven approach in any future negotiations, insisting that commitments must be backed by measurable outcomes rather than assurances alone.
