London: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is reportedly considering stepping down as early as Monday, according to a report by The Observer. The newspaper claimed that the prime minister may announce his resignation and outline a timeline for his departure. However, a government source has said Starmer remains focused on governing and has not made any final decision.
The report comes amid growing political pressure within the Labour Party, where internal divisions and leadership challenges have intensified in recent weeks.
Rising internal opposition within Labour
Starmer’s position has been increasingly under strain following the emergence of senior Labour figures positioning themselves as potential challengers.
One major development was the parliamentary return of Andy Burnham, a prominent Labour figure and Mayor of Greater Manchester, which is widely seen as strengthening his ability to mount a formal leadership challenge.
At the same time, former health minister Wes Streeting has also indicated willingness to contest the leadership, further highlighting the growing fragmentation within the party.
According to Reuters’ tally, more than 100 Labour MPs—roughly a quarter of the party’s representation in the House of Commons—have either called for Starmer’s resignation or demanded a clear timetable for his departure.
Government response and uncertainty
Despite the speculation, a government source rejected the resignation narrative, stating that Starmer is “focused on the job” and continuing with his responsibilities. The prime minister himself has previously insisted he intends to remain in office and would resist any internal attempts to force him out.
He has also warned against internal party infighting, arguing that political instability would damage public trust and distract from governance priorities.
Background: declining popularity and political pressure
Keir Starmer led the Labour Party to a landslide victory in the 2024 general election, ending years of Conservative rule. However, his government has since faced declining approval ratings amid criticism over policy reversals, economic concerns, and public dissatisfaction with living standards.
Analysts note that the current instability reflects broader voter frustration with UK politics, where frequent leadership changes have become increasingly common. If Starmer were to resign or be removed, it would mark the seventh change of UK prime minister in just over a decade.
Leadership contenders emerging
Andy Burnham is widely viewed within Labour circles as a strong potential successor, with growing support among party members. His recent parliamentary success has further strengthened his position as a serious contender for leadership.
Reports also suggest internal discussions among Labour figures about possible leadership transitions, although no formal challenge has yet been launched.
Meanwhile, speculation continues over possible cabinet reshuffles or policy shifts if a leadership contest unfolds.
What happens next
For now, the situation remains uncertain. While media reports suggest a possible resignation announcement on Monday, official government statements continue to deny any immediate departure.
The coming days are expected to be crucial in determining whether Starmer consolidates his position or faces a formal leadership challenge within the Labour Party.
