The Sindh government has announced public holidays on the 9th and 10th of Muharram-ul-Haram, which will be observed on June 25 and June 26, 2026, respectively.
According to a notification issued by the provincial Home Department, all government offices and institutions under the Sindh government will remain closed on these dates in observance of Ashura.
Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar and holds deep religious significance for Muslims around the world. The 9th and 10th of Muharram are observed with mourning processions, majalis (religious gatherings), and remembrance of the sacrifices made by Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions in the Battle of Karbala.
Muharram 1448 AH Began on June 14
Earlier, the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony announced that Muharram-ul-Haram 1448 AH began on June 14, 2026, marking the start of the new Islamic year.
As a result, Ashura will be observed nationwide on June 25 and 26, with special religious gatherings and processions taking place across the country.
Extensive Security Arrangements in Karachi
To ensure peaceful observance of Muharram, Karachi police and other law enforcement agencies have finalized comprehensive security measures.
Authorities have introduced a permit system for vehicles participating in the main Muharram processions from the 8th to the 10th of Muharram. Vehicle owners seeking permission were instructed to submit applications at the DIG Traffic Karachi Office, Garden Headquarters, between June 22 and June 23.
Applicants are required to provide:
- A copy of the vehicle registration book
- Valid CNIC of the vehicle owner
- Two recent passport-size photographs of the driver
- Driver’s CNIC
- An introduction letter from the relevant organization or institution
Strict Monitoring of Processions
Officials stated that passes will only be issued to authorized entities, including:
- Law enforcement agencies
- Registered organizations
- Ambulance services
- Media organizations
Other approved institutions
Authorities clarified that permits will not be granted to unregistered individuals, vehicles, or drivers. Additionally, a maximum of three persons will be allowed to travel on a single permit.
Police have warned that providing false information, misusing permits, or failing to cooperate during security checks may result in immediate cancellation of the pass and possible legal action.
The government has urged citizens to cooperate with security personnel and follow official guidelines to help ensure peaceful and secure Muharram observances across the province.
