Pakistan has taken a significant step toward strengthening trade ties with Iran by officially designating the Taftan border railway station as a land customs station for import and export operations. The decision, announced by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), is expected to facilitate rail-based trade, reduce transportation costs, and encourage greater use of formal trade channels between the two neighboring countries.
According to the announcement, the move follows a telephone conversation between the heads of Pakistan Railways and the Iranian railway authority, as well as subsequent official correspondence aimed at activating the Taftan railway border crossing for commercial operations.
Customs Facility to Cover 11.75 Hectares
Under the FBR notification, the Taftan railway station has been authorized to handle the loading, unloading, customs clearance, and processing of imported and exported goods. The customs facility will cover an area of 11.75 hectares, and its geographical boundaries have been officially defined, making the railway terminal an integral part of Pakistan’s national customs network.
This designation enables customs authorities to process cargo directly at the railway station, improving efficiency and simplifying cross-border trade procedures.
Boost for Rail-Based Trade Between Pakistan and Iran
Taftan serves as Pakistan’s primary land gateway to Iran and has long held strategic importance for bilateral trade. However, despite its location, the crossing has historically operated below its full potential due to infrastructure limitations and the absence of comprehensive customs facilities.
Trade experts believe the establishment of a dedicated railway customs station will significantly improve the movement of goods by rail. Faster customs clearance, lower logistics costs, and more efficient cargo handling are expected to make rail transport a more attractive option for importers and exporters.
In addition, shifting more cargo to rail could help ease pressure on road transport while improving the overall efficiency of cross-border logistics.
Formal Trade Expected to Increase
The new customs facility is also expected to strengthen formal trade by streamlining documentation, inspections, and customs clearance procedures. Authorities believe this will discourage smuggling and informal trade routes by making legal trade faster and more convenient for businesses.
A more organized customs system could also improve transparency and provide greater confidence for traders conducting business across the Pakistan-Iran border.
Part of a Broader Trade Expansion Strategy
The decision comes as Pakistan and Iran continue efforts to expand their economic partnership. In recent years, both governments have repeatedly expressed their commitment to increasing bilateral trade to $5 billion. However, progress toward that target has been slowed by banking restrictions, inadequate border infrastructure, and logistical challenges.
The designation of Taftan Railway Station as a land customs facility represents an important practical step toward addressing some of these obstacles. By strengthening customs infrastructure and improving rail connectivity, the initiative is expected to support long-term growth in bilateral trade and enhance economic cooperation between Pakistan and Iran.
