KARACHI: A 28-year-old doctor was killed during an apparent robbery near Teen Talwar in Karachi on Monday, as suspected robbers and a bank security guard exchanged gunfire. Police are investigating whether the fatal bullet was fired by one of the suspects or by the security guard.

According to South SSP Mahzoor Ali, the incident occurred after the victim, identified as Akash, withdrew a large amount of cash from a bank and was travelling with his father and cousin to another bank.

Robbers Target Vehicle Carrying Cash

Police said the family was transporting cash when their vehicle stopped near a bank. At that point, suspected robbers approached the car from behind.

According to the SSP, the vehicle was carrying two cash packets of Rs2.5 million each. During the incident, the suspects allegedly managed to snatch one packet containing Rs2.5 million before fleeing the scene.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the identities or number of the suspects involved.

Security Guard Opened Fire

South SSP Mahzoor Ali said the bank’s security guard apparently believed the occupants of the vehicle were robbers and opened fire.

The suspected robbers also fired shots, resulting in an exchange of gunfire outside the bank.

Investigators are currently examining evidence to determine whether the bullet that killed Dr Akash was fired by the security guard or by one of the alleged robbers.

Police Launch Investigation

Police teams reached the scene shortly after the incident and launched an investigation.

Investigators are reviewing available evidence, collecting witness statements, and examining the sequence of events to establish exactly how the shooting unfolded and identify those responsible.

The stolen cash and the circumstances surrounding the robbery are also part of the ongoing inquiry.

Body Shifted to Jinnah Hospital

Following the incident, Dr Akash’s body was shifted to the mortuary at Jinnah Hospital for legal formalities.

According to family members, the 28-year-old doctor had been serving at Jinnah Hospital for the past two years.

Speaking to the media, the victim’s uncle, Khem Chand, said the shooting occurred outside the bank and confirmed that his nephew lost his life during the incident.

Family Demands Swift Arrests

The victim’s family has demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible.

They warned that if the suspects are not apprehended promptly, they will stage a sit-in protest with the doctor’s body.

Police say efforts are underway to trace the suspects and determine the source of the fatal gunfire. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have said further details will be shared as the inquiry progresses.
