ISLAMABAD: The government has announced the registration procedure for a special petrol relief scheme offering a Rs100-per-litre subsidy to motorcyclists, rickshaw and Chingchi owners, and users of vehicles with engine capacities of up to 800cc.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced the scheme on Sunday to provide relief to citizens facing the impact of rising fuel prices amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.
Petrol is currently priced at Rs375.82 per litre, while high-speed diesel costs Rs403.32 per litre following increases of Rs5.02 and Rs5.28 per litre, respectively.
Shehbaz said the government was aware of the difficulties caused by higher fuel prices and would take measures to reduce the burden on low-income citizens.
“We are launching a special scheme to reduce the burden of rising fuel prices on those using motorcycles, rickshaws, Chingchis and small vehicles,” he said.
Who is eligible?
The relief scheme covers motorcycles, rickshaws, Chingchis and other two- and three-wheeled vehicles, as well as small vehicles with engine capacities of up to 800cc.
Owners and users of motorcycles, rickshaws, Chingchis and other two- and three-wheelers will receive a subsidy of Rs100 per litre on up to 20 litres of petrol per month.
For vehicles with engine capacities of up to 800cc, the same Rs100-per-litre relief will apply to up to 30 litres of petrol per month.
How to register for the scheme?
The Ministry of IT and Telecommunication has issued the registration procedure for eligible citizens.
Applicants must send an SMS containing “REG” followed by their CNIC number to 9771.
The registration message must also include the vehicle number, provincial code and registration date, according to the ministry.

Registration has been opened with immediate effect, while the government plans to conduct an awareness campaign to educate citizens about the process.
Once registration is successfully completed, eligible applicants can obtain a fuel token by sending “TOK” to 9771.
The token can then be presented at participating petrol stations to purchase petrol at the subsidised rate.
When will the relief begin?
The fuel relief scheme will initially become operational in Islamabad from the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday.
In the rest of the country, including Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, the subsidy will be available from the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday.
The scheme is aimed at providing targeted relief to people who rely on motorcycles, three-wheelers and small-engine vehicles amid the recent increase in fuel prices.
