Section 144 Extended for Seven More Days
The Punjab government has extended the enforcement of Section 144 across the province for an additional seven days due to growing concerns over public safety and security, similar to measures recently imposed in the Rawalpindi Division here. The extension, announced by the Punjab Home Department, is valid until Saturday, November 8, and continues to prohibit all forms of public gatherings.
Under this order, protests, rallies, processions, public meetings, and sit-ins remain banned. Furthermore, the assembly of four or more individuals in public spaces is strictly prohibited. Authorities have emphasized that these measures aim to maintain law and order and protect both lives and property.
Restrictions on Weapons and Public Displays
The Home Department spokesperson stated that the use or display of weapons, unauthorized use of loudspeakers, and the dissemination of provocative or sectarian material remain fully restricted. These regulations are intended to prevent incidents that could incite violence or create unrest among the public.
The notification clarifies that the imposition of Section 144 is a preventive measure, particularly in light of potential terrorism threats and the current public safety situation. The government stressed that these measures are not arbitrary but are aimed at safeguarding human lives and maintaining social stability.
Exceptions and Essential Activities
Certain activities remain exempt from the restrictions. These include weddings, funerals, and burial ceremonies, as well as official duties performed by government officers, security personnel, and courts. The spokesperson further clarified that loudspeaker use is restricted to the call to prayer (Adhan) and Friday sermons only.
Officials warned that public rallies or gatherings could serve as soft targets for terrorist elements, making these preventive measures necessary. Citizens are urged to fully comply with the government directives and report any suspicious activities immediately to law enforcement authorities.
Public Appeal for Cooperation
The Home Department emphasized the importance of cooperation from the public to ensure the effectiveness of these measures. Authorities reminded residents that timely reporting of unusual or suspicious behavior could help prevent potential threats and maintain overall security.
This extension of Section 144 highlights the Punjab government’s cautious approach amid continuing concerns over law and order, while balancing the need for essential civic and religious activities.
