Bollywood actor Emraan Hashmi has revealed that his life took a dramatic turn when his young son was diagnosed with cancer. The 46-year-old actor described the moment as the most painful period of his life, saying it forced him to shift his focus from his flourishing career to his responsibilities as a father.
In a resurfaced interview during the success of his recent television series Tashkiri, Hashmi reflected on 2014, the year his son Ayaan was diagnosed with cancer. He told YouTuber Ranuvir Elah Badiya that it was a time he struggles to put into words.
The most difficult phase of my life was when my son fell ill in 2014. I don’t have the words to fully express what that time felt like, Hashmi said. It lasted for five years, and in just a single afternoon, my entire life changed.

Hashmi shared a vivid account of the day he first learned about his son’s illness. On January 13, 2014, he went out to eat with his family. While enjoying a simple meal of pizza with Ayaan, they noticed blood in his son’s urine – a symptom that would prove life-altering.
Within three hours, the family had consulted a doctor who delivered the shocking news: Ayaan had cancer. The doctor explained that the young boy would need surgery the very next day, followed by chemotherapy. In just twelve hours, my entire world was turned upside down, Hashmi recalled.
The Emotional Toll
Hashmi emphasized how the diagnosis changed him personally and professionally. The actor, known for his roles in films like Murder and Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai, admitted that his career ambitions temporarily took a backseat as he focused entirely on his son’s treatment.
The five years that followed were extremely challenging, he said. I had to navigate my work commitments while being constantly present for my son during his treatment. It was an emotional rollercoaster, every single day.

Childhood cancer remains a major health concern globally. According to the World Health Organization, around 300,000 children aged 0–19 are diagnosed with cancer each year, and access to timely treatment can be limited, even in developed countries.
