Amjad Hussain Sworn In as Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister After PPP’s Election Victory

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Amjad Hussain Advocate was sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan on Monday, formally taking office after his party emerged as the largest political force in the region’s 2026 elections.

The oath of office was administered by Gilgit-Baltistan Governor Syed Mehdi Shah during a ceremony held in Gilgit, attended by political leaders, government officials, and party workers.

PPP Forms Government After Election Success

Addressing the ceremony, Chief Minister Amjad Hussain said the PPP had secured the largest number of seats in the June 7, 2026 Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly elections, enabling it to form the regional government.

He described the election outcome as a reflection of the people’s confidence in the party and pledged to honor the mandate given by voters.

According to Hussain, the PPP’s candidates achieved victories across several constituencies, strengthening the party’s position in the regional assembly.

Tribute to Youth and Women Voters

The newly elected chief minister praised the active participation of young people and women in the electoral process, saying their involvement had played a vital role in the success of the democratic process.

He thanked voters for placing their trust in the PPP and said the party remained committed to serving the people of Gilgit-Baltistan.

“I thank those who gave the Pakistan Peoples Party a 100 percent result in the elections,” he said during his address.

‘A Relationship Spanning Three Generations’

Amjad Hussain said the strong public support for the PPP reflected a longstanding relationship between the party and the people of Gilgit-Baltistan.

“This relationship is not new; it spans three generations,” he said, adding that the election results demonstrated continued public confidence in the party despite it not leading the federal government.

He also highlighted the PPP’s performance in Diamer, saying the party had secured a strong electoral mandate there for the first time.

The chief minister expressed gratitude to the PPP leadership for its continued support and confidence in him.

He also thanked the leadership of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) for supporting the PPP’s opportunity to form the regional government.

The remarks reflected the cooperative political arrangements that emerged following the regional elections.

Elected Unopposed as Chief Minister

Amjad Hussain was elected unopposed as Chief Minister after no other member submitted nomination papers for the post.

He represents the GBA-1 constituency in the Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly and also serves as President of the PPP Gilgit-Baltistan chapter.

With his oath-taking, Amjad Hussain becomes the fifth Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan. His government is expected to focus on governance, regional development, infrastructure, public services, and addressing the socio-economic priorities of the people of the region during its tenure.
