Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has offered no definitive answer on whether the company’s next-generation console, Project Helix, will feature a built-in disc drive, leaving the future of physical game media uncertain.

Speaking to the BBC in an interview published on August 26, Sharma acknowledged the ongoing debate over physical and digital games but avoided confirming the hardware specifications of Xbox’s upcoming console.

Her comments come as the gaming industry continues to move towards digital distribution, while a significant section of players still prefers owning physical copies of games.

Xbox focuses on affordability and efficiency

Asked directly whether Project Helix would include a disc drive, Sharma shifted the focus towards the broader challenges facing the next generation of gaming hardware.

“This next generation, we have to be thinking about efficiency and affordability alongside performance,” she said.

Sharma added that the industry as a whole needs to explore new ways of making gaming hardware and experiences more affordable and efficient.

“All of the industry needs to start to innovate on affordability and efficiency,” she said.

While the Xbox chief did not confirm or deny the presence of a disc drive, her response suggests that cost and hardware efficiency will be important considerations as Microsoft develops its next-generation Xbox platform.

Physical games still have a strong following

Despite the rapid growth of digital game sales, Sharma recognised that many Xbox players continue to value physical media.

“I know players love physical media, and I know there’s a lot of benefits in digital media, and I want to make sure people have a choice,” she said.

She also pointed to the large collections of physical games that players already have at home, highlighting why compatibility with existing libraries could remain an important consideration for future Xbox hardware.

For players who have invested heavily in physical Xbox games, the presence of a disc drive could determine whether they can continue using their existing collections without relying entirely on digital versions.

Xbox expands disc-to-digital options

Microsoft’s approach to physical media is also evolving through its recently announced disc-to-digital programme.

The company officially unveiled the programme during Gamescom in Germany last week. It is designed to give players another option for transitioning games from physical discs to digital versions.

The programme is scheduled to become available to Xbox Insiders from August 31, before eventually being rolled out to all Xbox players. Microsoft has not yet announced a specific date for the wider release.

Project Helix remains largely under wraps

For now, Microsoft has kept many details about Project Helix private. The lack of a clear answer regarding a disc drive means players will have to wait for further announcements to learn whether the next Xbox will support physical game discs directly.

Sharma’s comments do, however, indicate that Microsoft is aware of the demand for physical media and does not appear to be dismissing the format outright.

With affordability, efficiency and performance all emerging as key priorities for the next generation, the eventual hardware design of Project Helix could provide a clearer indication of how Xbox intends to balance the traditional physical gaming market with the industry’s continuing shift towards digital distribution.
