India’s major media venture JioStar, backed by billionaire Mukesh Ambani, has terminated its broadcast agreement in Bangladesh for the Indian Premier League (IPL), citing payment defaults by its local partner. The move has created uncertainty around IPL coverage in Bangladesh during the ongoing season.

Agreement Ended Over Payment Issues

According to a document seen by Reuters, JioStar formally ended its agreement with Bangladeshi broadcaster TSports through a letter dated February 17. The company stated that the decision was due to the partner’s “continued failure” to meet payment deadlines outlined in the contract.

The deal had granted TSports sublicensed rights to broadcast IPL matches from 2023 to 2027. However, repeated financial defaults led to its abrupt termination.

Uncertainty for IPL Broadcast in Bangladesh

The development comes at a time when Bangladesh had already imposed a ban on IPL broadcasts earlier this year. In January, authorities halted transmissions after Kolkata Knight Riders dropped Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman, amid rising tensions between the two countries.

Although the Bangladeshi government is currently reviewing the ban, JioStar’s decision means there may be no local broadcaster available for the IPL, even if the restriction is lifted.

Women’s Premier League Deal Also Cancelled

A separate letter from JioStar confirmed that the company has also terminated its broadcast agreement in Bangladesh for the Women’s Premier League (WPL) due to similar payment issues. This indicates that the financial dispute was not limited to a single tournament.

Political Context and Regional Tensions

India-Bangladesh relations have been strained since a political transition in Dhaka in August 2024, which disrupted previously close ties under former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. However, recent statements from the new leadership suggest a possible thaw, with commitments to engage neighboring countries based on mutual respect and shared interests.

Impact on Fans and Industry

The IPL, valued at around $18.5 billion, is the world’s richest cricket league and enjoys massive popularity in Bangladesh. The absence of an official broadcaster could significantly impact fans, advertisers, and the local media industry.

JioStar’s decision highlights not only a commercial dispute but also the broader impact of geopolitical and economic factors on sports broadcasting. As the IPL season progresses, it remains to be seen whether an alternative arrangement will emerge or if Bangladeshi viewers will miss out entirely.
