Lahore: Pakistan’s experienced all-rounder Mohammad Nawaz has come under investigation by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) following reports of a positive drug test for a recreational substance. The matter was reportedly referred to the PCB by the International Cricket Council (ICC), prompting the board to initiate formal disciplinary proceedings.

How the Case Emerged

According to reports, the ICC notified the PCB about the issue, after which the board began its due process. A PCB spokesperson confirmed that the case is being handled in accordance with established protocols and that the outcome will be communicated to the ICC.

The ICC, however, has declined to comment publicly, which is standard practice in ongoing anti-doping or disciplinary matters.

Link to T20 World Cup Testing

It is understood that the positive test is connected to samples taken during this year’s T20 World Cup held in Sri Lanka. Nawaz was an active member of Pakistan’s squad and featured in all seven matches during the tournament.

In terms of performance, the 32-year-old scored 15 runs and claimed seven wickets. Pakistan’s campaign ended at the Super Eight stage, falling short of expectations. While his on-field contributions were modest, the current issue has shifted attention away from cricketing performance to disciplinary concerns.

Surrey Contract Cancelled

Before this development, Nawaz had agreed to join English county side Surrey for the T20 Blast, scheduled from May 26 to July 18. The PCB had already issued him a No-Objection Certificate (NOC), and the club was preparing to formally announce his signing.

However, following the emergence of the drug test report, the agreement has now been cancelled. Surrey has also chosen not to comment on the situation, indicating the sensitivity of the matter.

Continued Participation in PSL

Despite the ongoing investigation, Nawaz continues to play in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) for Multan Sultans. In a recent match against Rawalpindi, he bowled three overs but did not take a wicket.

This suggests that, pending the outcome of the investigation, he remains eligible to participate in domestic competitions.

Broader Context and Potential Impact

Anti-doping regulations in international cricket are strict, and any confirmed violation can carry serious consequences, including suspension or bans. If the allegations are proven, Nawaz could face disciplinary action that may significantly impact his career.

For now, the cricketing community awaits the PCB’s final decision, which will be crucial not only for Nawaz but also for maintaining the integrity of the sport.
