Tech billionaire Elon Musk has publicly praised Pakistan’s judicial system following a Lahore High Court decision that upheld death sentences in the high-profile motorway gang-rape case, calling for similar strict accountability in Western countries.
LHC Verdict in the Motorway Rape Case
The comments came after the Lahore High Court (LHC) dismissed appeals filed by two convicts, Abid Malhi and Shafqat Baga, and upheld their death sentences in the motorway gang-rape case. The court also maintained additional punishments awarded by the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC), including prison terms and fines.
A two-member bench comprising Justice Syed Shahbaz Ali Rizvi and Justice Tariq Mahmood Bajwa delivered the verdict after hearing arguments from both prosecution and defence.
The prosecution argued that the original trial was based on strong evidence, including forensic material and identification procedures, and insisted that the convictions were lawful and justified. In contrast, the defence claimed that the trial court had not properly examined the evidence and requested the sentences to be overturned.
Elon Musk’s Reaction on Social Media
Following the court’s decision, Elon Musk commented on the microblogging platform X (formerly Twitter), expressing admiration for Pakistan’s legal outcome. He wrote:
“Bravo, Pakistan! This is what we should be doing in the West.”
His statement quickly gained attention online, sparking debate about criminal justice standards, sentencing severity, and differences between legal systems across countries.

Background of the Case
The case dates back to September 2020, when a woman was gang-raped on the Lahore-Sialkot motorway in a widely condemned incident that triggered national outrage and protests.
According to official records, the FIR was registered at Gujjarpura Police Station in Lahore. Investigators later collected DNA evidence from the crime scene, linking one of the accused to the incident, while the other was traced through mobile data records (CDR).
In March 2021, an Anti-Terrorism Court sentenced both men to death for rape, along with additional penalties including imprisonment for robbery, abduction of the victim’s children, and damage to property.
Legal Proceedings and Final Outcome
After the ATC verdict, both convicts appealed to the Lahore High Court on March 25, 2021. However, the LHC has now upheld the original judgment, reinforcing the earlier ruling and maintaining all sentences.
The decision is being seen as a significant affirmation of the lower court’s findings and the strength of forensic and testimonial evidence presented during the trial.
Wider Debate on Justice Systems
The case and Musk’s reaction have also reignited broader discussions about criminal justice approaches worldwide, particularly regarding punishment severity, deterrence, and legal consistency. While some view the verdict as a strong step toward accountability, others continue to debate broader reforms in legal and investigative systems.
