Lionel Messi created history on Monday by becoming the highest goal scorer in World Cup history. The Argentina captain reached the landmark with his 17th goal in the tournament during a 2026 World Cup group-stage match against Austria in Arlington, Texas.
The goal came in the 38th minute when Messi calmly swept the ball into the net, sending Argentina fans into celebration at the Dallas stadium. Earlier in the match, he had also missed a penalty, but later redeemed himself with the record-breaking strike.
Surpassing Miroslav Klose’s Long-Standing Record
With this goal, Messi moved past Germany’s Miroslav Klose, who previously held the record with 16 World Cup goals. Messi had equalled that tally in Argentina’s opening match of the tournament before breaking it in the second game.
The milestone further strengthens Messi’s legacy as one of the greatest footballers in history, particularly on the World Cup stage where he has consistently delivered across multiple editions.
Sixth World Cup Appearance for Messi
The 38-year-old is currently playing in his sixth World Cup, having made his debut in 2006. Over the course of his international career, Messi has now scored 121 goals in 201 appearances for Argentina.
His longevity at the highest level has been widely praised, with many analysts highlighting his ability to remain decisive even in the later stages of his career.

Key Role in Argentina’s Title Defence
Messi’s form is a major boost for Argentina as they aim to defend their World Cup title. The team is looking to become the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to win back-to-back championships.
Argentina’s players have repeatedly emphasized Messi’s influence on and off the pitch. Midfielder Alexis Mac Allister recently noted that Messi remains the team’s most important figure, especially in high-pressure matches.
Despite fitness concerns and personal challenges ahead of the tournament, Messi has continued to lead from the front.
World Cup Goal Scoring Rankings
Before Messi’s new record, Miroslav Klose led the all-time World Cup scoring chart with 16 goals. Behind him were Brazilian legends Ronaldo (15 goals) and Gerd Müller, along with France’s Kylian Mbappé, who remains among the active contenders climbing the list.
With the tournament still ongoing, Messi may further extend his record as Argentina progress into the knockout stages.
