Leadership Role Strengthened
Pakistan Test captain Shan Masood is set to receive two significant boosts to his career. According to local media reports, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is not only considering an improvement in his central contract category but is also preparing to keep him as the team’s long-term Test captain.
Sources told Hum News that Masood, along with Pakistan’s red-ball head coach Azhar Mahmood, recently met PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi in Lahore. The meeting focused on the team’s leadership structure and contract allocations for the coming season.
Decision on Long-Term Captaincy
The PCB is reportedly planning to retain Shan Masood as Test captain for the entire 2025–27 World Test Championship cycle. This would mean at least two years of consistent leadership at the helm of the Test side, a rarity in Pakistan cricket where frequent captaincy changes have often disrupted stability.
Chairman Mohsin Naqvi is said to have assured both Masood and Azhar Mahmood that they would enjoy greater autonomy in decision-making. While Masood will not officially be part of the selection committee, he will be consulted on squad choices and strategy. This indicates the board’s intention to give the leadership group more influence over team matters, reducing past frictions between management and selectors.
Contract Upgrade on the Horizon
Alongside his leadership role, Masood is also likely to receive an upgrade in the upcoming 2025–26 central contracts. Last season, he was placed in Category D, a lower tier compared to other captains. By contrast, ODI skipper Mohammad Rizwan and T20I captain Salman Ali Agha were both awarded Category B contracts.
Masood had previously been part of Category B, and the PCB is now expected to reinstate him at that level. The move is being seen as recognition of his growing importance to the Test side and his enhanced responsibilities as captain.
Central contracts are a crucial part of the PCB’s structure, determining monthly retainers and match fees. Higher categories not only reflect seniority but also provide greater financial security for players.
From Babar Azam to Shan Masood
Masood was appointed Test captain in November 2023 after Babar Azam stepped down from leadership across all three formats following Pakistan’s disappointing run at the ICC World Cup. His elevation was initially viewed as a transitional move, but his calm leadership style and tactical acumen have impressed the board.
Although his personal batting record has been inconsistent at the international level, Masood has long been regarded as one of Pakistan’s most technically sound red-ball players. His domestic performances, particularly in county cricket with Derbyshire, showcased his resilience and leadership potential.
Why Stability Matters for Pakistan
Pakistan cricket has historically struggled with leadership instability. Captains have often been changed after poor series results or due to boardroom politics. If the PCB confirms Masood’s tenure for the full Test Championship cycle, it would mark a rare commitment to continuity.
The World Test Championship 2025–27 will see Pakistan play against top sides including India, Australia, England, and South Africa. Having a settled captain and coaching staff could help the team prepare with clearer strategies and long-term planning.
Moreover, giving Masood and Mahmood autonomy in cricketing decisions could foster accountability and trust within the squad. Analysts note that this approach is closer to models adopted by successful Test-playing nations like Australia and England, where captains play a central role in shaping team identity.
Looking Ahead
With the dual prospect of a contract promotion and a long-term leadership mandate, Shan Masood is entering a pivotal phase in his career. His immediate task will be to strengthen Pakistan’s red-ball performances, particularly overseas, where results have historically been inconsistent.
For the PCB, backing Masood represents both a gamble and an opportunity. If he delivers stability and results, Pakistan cricket may finally break the cycle of leadership uncertainty. If not, the pressure from fans and media could once again test the board’s resolve.
Either way, the coming Test Championship cycle will define not only Shan Masood’s legacy as captain but also the PCB’s commitment to building a stronger, more consistent Test team.
