Rizwan Defends Team Unity Amid Leadership Questions

KARACHI — Former Pakistan captain Mohammad Rizwan has reaffirmed his support for Shaheen Shah Afridi, saying the fast bowler has always been my captain and still is. Speaking after Pakistan’s thrilling two-wicket victory over South Africa in the first One Day International (ODI), Rizwan downplayed any speculation of tension within the squad following recent captaincy changes.

Rizwan, who briefly led the national side, said that leadership decisions rest with the team management and selectors, not individual players. Some decisions are beyond our control, he told reporters in Karachi. Our job as players is to keep working hard, and that’s what we’re doing.

Every Player Is a Leader

Rizwan emphasized that during his own tenure as captain, he viewed every member of the team as a leader. When I was captain, all players were captains in their own right, he said. Shaheen’s captaincy has not affected my performance or our friendship. I still share my thoughts and suggestions with him.

The statement appears aimed at reinforcing unity and mutual respect in a team that has undergone several leadership changes in recent months. Pakistan’s cricket administration has faced criticism over frequent reshuffles, including transitions between Babar Azam, Shaheen Afridi, and Rizwan in leadership roles.

Tactical Decisions and Match Reflections

Explaining the team’s decision to bowl first after winning the toss, Rizwan said the choice was made due to dew conditions later in the evening. Bowling becomes more difficult when the ball gets wet, so we decided to bowl first, he noted.

Rizwan also reflected on his innings, admitting he was disappointed not to finish the match despite batting well alongside Salman Ali Agha. We both played good innings but couldn’t take the game till the end, he said. The pitch was challenging for both sides, and the goal was to fight till the last over.

Pakistan Secure Narrow Victory

Pakistan edged South Africa by two wickets in the opening ODI of the three-match series. The tense finish kept fans on edge, with Pakistan chasing down the target in the final overs.

Rizwan concluded by acknowledging the team’s mistakes but remained optimistic. We made a few errors, but that’s part of the learning process, he said. The important thing is to improve with every match.

The next ODI will be crucial as Pakistan aim to build on their 1–0 lead and strengthen their position ahead of the upcoming international season.
