Faiz Hameed Sentence Signals Start of Accountability

Islamabad – Senator Faisal Wada described the 14-year rigorous imprisonment sentence of former Lieutenant General Faiz Hameed as the beginning of Pakistan’s broad accountability process. Speaking to Geo News, Wada said other cases linked to the May 9 incidents are still under investigation. Moreover, he stressed that the judicial process will continue without interruption.

This is a long and comprehensive accountability process. It will not stop, and no one will be above the law, Wada said. Furthermore, he added that the verdict against Hameed sets a clear precedent, showing that political and military figures cannot avoid legal scrutiny in Pakistan.

Legal Action Against Political Figures

Wada highlighted that Hameed was not the only one involved in the May 9 unrest. Alongside him, the political party that participated in these events will also face accountability, he said. The May 9 incidents involved violent protests and attacks on government offices. Authorities have been investigating these events closely.

In addition, Wada noted that after the May 9 cases conclude, legal actions regarding the political party and PTI’s founder will become clear. He also revealed that he had warned the party about certain decisions that could have irreversible consequences. Consequently, this led to his removal from the party.

Transparency and Rule of Law

Wada emphasized that the accountability process is now transparent and impartial. No one in the country will remain above the law, he said. In particular, he mentioned ongoing trials, such as the case of journalist Arshad Sharif, which will soon see outcomes. These rulings, he added, will reinforce the judiciary’s credibility.

Moreover, Wada stated that all relevant cases will continue to be heard. He believes this will strengthen both the rule of law and the integrity of Pakistan’s judicial system.

Political Implications

These developments highlight Pakistan’s struggle with political instability and the challenge of enforcing the law impartially. Over the years, the judiciary has increasingly acted to hold powerful figures accountable. Accordingly, analysts say the May 9 cases could affect civil-military relations, given the military’s historic influence on politics.

Wada concluded that the accountability process will continue. Ultimately, he reiterated that decisions in all pending cases will uphold the supremacy of law and the transparency of the judiciary.

Context: May 9 Incidents

The May 9 events followed widespread protests after PTI Chairman Imran Khan’s arrest. Supporters attacked government offices, media outlets, and law enforcement personnel. Multiple casualties and property damage occurred during these protests.

Since then, authorities have investigated both political leaders and security officials involved. The sentencing of Faiz Hameed, former ISI chief, has drawn national attention. Therefore, it signals the judiciary’s commitment to holding powerful individuals accountable. Observers believe that upcoming rulings in related cases could reshape Pakistan’s political landscape.
