The visit comes at a significant diplomatic moment, as Pakistan’s mediation efforts helped the United States and Iran reach a framework for continued negotiations toward a comprehensive peace deal.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is scheduled to arrive in Pakistan on Tuesday following a round of US-Iran negotiations in Switzerland that resulted in a 60-day roadmap toward a final agreement.

According to Iran’s state news agency IRNA, one of the key objectives of the visit is to express appreciation to Shehbaz Sharif for Pakistan’s role in facilitating dialogue between Tehran and Washington.

Pakistan’s Mediation Efforts Recognised

The announcement comes shortly after talks between the United States and Iran in Switzerland, where Pakistan and Qatar acted as mediators.

Officials said the negotiations produced encouraging progress and established a framework for continued engagement. The two sides agreed to pursue a final agreement within 60 days, while technical-level discussions will continue throughout the week at the Buergenstock Resort.

Pakistan has played an active diplomatic role throughout the process, hosting earlier contacts and helping maintain communication channels between the two countries.

Key Outcomes of the Switzerland Talks

A joint statement issued by the mediators highlighted several important developments:

  • Agreement on a roadmap toward a final deal within 60 days.
  • Establishment of a high-level committee to oversee the negotiation process.
  • Continuation of technical discussions between US and Iranian teams.
  • Creation of a communication mechanism to help ensure safe commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
  • Agreement on a framework aimed at reducing hostilities in Lebanon.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most strategically important energy routes, carrying a significant portion of global oil exports.

Progress on Nuclear Issues

US Vice President JD Vance described the talks as productive and said Iran had agreed to allow inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to return.

Vance called the move a major milestone and said the first round of negotiations had established “a very good foundation” for a broader agreement.

However, he cautioned that substantial work remains before a final settlement can be reached, particularly on nuclear, economic and security-related issues.

Shehbaz Sharif Welcomes Progress

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif described the discussions as being held in a “positive and constructive atmosphere” and said they had concluded successfully.

He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to supporting diplomacy and peaceful conflict resolution, while thanking Qatar and Switzerland for their contributions to the negotiation process.

The prime minister also praised both the United States and Iran for maintaining their commitment to dialogue despite ongoing regional tensions.

Significance of Pezeshkian’s Visit

President Pezeshkian’s visit is expected to further strengthen diplomatic ties between Pakistan and Iran while highlighting Islamabad’s growing role as a facilitator in regional diplomacy.

The visit also comes at a time when both Washington and Tehran are attempting to build momentum toward a comprehensive agreement that could address nuclear issues, sanctions, regional security concerns and long-term stability in the Middle East.
