Veteran guard Marcus Smart has agreed to a two-year, $13 million contract with the Houston Rockets, strengthening the team’s backcourt as free agency continues.

According to NBA insider Shams Charania, the deal includes a player option for the second season, giving Smart flexibility after the first year of the contract.

The agreement was finalized on July 1, shortly after the NBA’s free agency period officially opened.

Reunion with Ime Udoka

The move reunites Smart with Houston head coach Ime Udoka, under whom he previously played earlier in his career.

Known for his defensive intensity, leadership, and versatility, Smart is expected to bring valuable experience to a Rockets team looking to strengthen its roster for the upcoming season.

Smart Entered Free Agency After Declining Player Option

Before signing with Houston, Smart declined a $5.4 million player option, choosing instead to test the free-agent market.

His previous contract reportedly included a player option for the second year, allowing him to explore new opportunities this offseason.

Productive Season Before Free Agency

During the 2025-26 season, Smart appeared in 62 games, making the majority of his appearances as a starter.

He averaged:

  • 9.3 points per game
  • 3.0 assists per game
  • 2.8 rebounds per game
  • 28.5 minutes per game

His overall impact extended beyond the traditional statistics, with his team reportedly outscoring opponents by 256 points while he was on the court, highlighting his defensive presence and leadership.

Strong Playoff Performance

Smart also delivered several notable performances during the postseason.

One of his standout games came when injuries sidelined key teammates, allowing him to take on a larger offensive role. In that contest, he recorded 21 points, 10 assists, and five steals, demonstrating his ability to contribute on both ends of the floor.

Across the 2026 NBA playoffs, Smart averaged 2.4 steals per game, ranking third among all players in the postseason.

Rockets Add Experience to Their Roster

Houston’s acquisition of Smart adds a proven veteran with championship-level experience and a reputation as one of the league’s premier perimeter defenders.

The signing comes during an active free-agency period across the NBA and provides the Rockets with additional depth, defensive toughness, and leadership as they continue building their roster for the 2026-27 season.
