Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian arrived in Islamabad on Tuesday for a one-day official visit, receiving a warm welcome from Pakistan’s top leadership. The visit comes at a significant moment in regional diplomacy, following Pakistan-mediated talks between Iran and the United States in Switzerland that reportedly produced a roadmap toward a comprehensive agreement.

Grand Reception in Islamabad

President Pezeshkian landed in Islamabad aboard a special aircraft operated by Mirage Airlines, identified as “Minab 168.” According to Iranian sources, the aircraft’s designation serves as a tribute to 168 children who were killed in an attack on a school in Iran’s Minab city.

Upon arrival, the Iranian president was accorded a red-carpet welcome and a guard of honour. He was received by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, President Asif Ali Zardari, senior Pakistani officials, and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

The visit marks President Pezeshkian’s first foreign trip since the conflict that began after US and Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28, making the diplomatic engagement particularly significant.

Focus on Bilateral Cooperation

According to Pakistan’s Foreign Office, President Pezeshkian is accompanied by a high-level delegation comprising ministers and senior government officials.

During his stay, he is scheduled to meet President Asif Ali Zardari and hold detailed discussions with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The talks are expected to cover a wide range of issues, including trade, energy cooperation, border management, regional connectivity, and people-to-people exchanges.

Officials from both countries are also expected to review the overall state of bilateral relations and explore new opportunities for strengthening cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

Pakistan’s Mediation Role

Iranian presidential office spokesperson Habibollah Abbasi stated that one of the key objectives of the visit is to express appreciation to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for Pakistan’s mediation efforts between Tehran and Washington.

The visit comes just one day after Pakistan and Qatar announced that the first round of high-level US-Iran talks held in Buergenstock, Switzerland, had resulted in a 60-day roadmap aimed at achieving a final agreement between the two sides.

Progress in US-Iran Talks

According to a joint statement issued by the mediators, the United States and Iran made encouraging progress during the opening round of negotiations. The two sides agreed to continue technical discussions throughout the week and work toward a comprehensive deal within the next 60 days.

The talks also addressed regional security issues, including efforts to establish a mechanism for ending hostilities in Lebanon and maintaining safe passage for commercial shipping through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical energy transit routes.

US Vice President JD Vance described the discussions as a positive first step and said the negotiations had laid a strong foundation for a broader peace agreement.

Regional Stability and Future Engagement

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif welcomed the commitment shown by both Iran and the United States toward dialogue and diplomacy. He reiterated Pakistan’s willingness to continue playing a constructive and impartial role in efforts aimed at achieving lasting peace and stability in the region.

The prime minister also thanked Qatar for facilitating the negotiations and acknowledged Switzerland’s role in hosting the talks.

President Pezeshkian’s visit underscores the close historical, cultural, and diplomatic ties between Pakistan and Iran. Observers believe the meetings in Islamabad could further strengthen bilateral relations while contributing to wider regional efforts focused on peace, economic cooperation, and long-term stability.
